Demolition With Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs)

Demolition With Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs)

Demolition is a highly important aspect of construction when you are looking to renovate or replace a current building or structure. Asbestos was a material that was extensively used as an insulating agent up until the late 1990s.

This means that asbestos is a dangerous reality for many construction projects with the material likely to still be present in older or historic buildings constructed on or before 2000. We have many years of experience supporting clients with demolition projects involving ACMs or asbestos. We will ensure that asbestos is handled with the care that is required and we will support you in demolition projects where asbestos is involved.

At Wilsons Groundworks, we are one of the leading independent demolition companies in Bristol and the South West. We will work with you to ensure that your demolition project is carried out safely as well as advise and follow the necessary steps should Asbestos be present in a building before demolition or renovation takes place. The Risks Associated With Asbestos & ACMs

Asbestos is carcinogenic when the asbestos fibres are disturbed and distributed into the air. The lungs cannot break down asbestos fibres once inhaled and this can then go on to form mesothelioma or cause cancerous tumours. Although prolonged exposure to asbestos is more likely to cause mesothelioma or cancer long-term – short-term inhalation can also pose a risk so it’s important that asbestos is properly managed if it may be or is present in a building.

Demolition can destroy asbestos-containing materials and then scatter them into the air around the building – which causes a big risk to workers and bystanders that may be within the spread zone. This is why there are legal requirements for the demolition of buildings that were constructed on or before the year 2000 to stop this from occurring.

Handling a Building Where Asbestos May Be Present

Every demolition project on older buildings should have an asbestos risk management policy in place during the planning stage of the project. It’s more likely than not that you are demolishing an older building compared to a newer one – so it’s important to have asbestos in mind when planning the demolition project. The law requires asbestos testing to be carried out on the building before demolition can take place if the building was constructed on or before the year 2000. Once testing occurs then asbestos may be identified or the building will be marked safe from containing asbestos. This is usually conducted by carrying out sampling on insulation materials that are present in the building. Once this has taken place, asbestos can be safely disposed of or demolition can commence if asbestos isn’t present.
